Reentry is one of the most critical transition points in a person’s life. For individuals recently released from incarceration, barriers such as low digital literacy, unfamiliar hiring systems, and limited access to education can make stability difficult to achieve.

In February, SpecOpsPATH partnered with Mass Liberation to deliver a 4-week, in-person artificial intelligence training program designed specifically for reentry populations. The program focuses on practical AI literacy, emotional regulation, and employment readiness without requiring any prior technical experience.

Why AI Education Matters for Reentry Populations

Modern employers increasingly rely on digital systems and AI-driven tools for hiring, scheduling, and productivity. Returning citizens are often excluded simply because they have not been exposed to these systems.

SpecOpsPATH addresses this gap by teaching participants:

  • How AI is used in real-world employment settings

  • How to safely and responsibly interact with AI tools

  • How to use AI to support job searches, resumes, and interviews

  • How digital skills function as a protective factor against recidivism

This is not coding or software engineering—it is practical AI usage for everyday life and work.

A Trauma-Informed, Dignity-Centered AI Curriculum

SpecOpsPATH was intentionally designed with a trauma-informed framework that respects lived experience and reduces cognitive overload during reentry.

The curriculum integrates AI assistance into:

  • Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as scheduling, planning, and organization

  • Stress management and emotional regulation

  • Decision-making and goal setting

  • Interview preparation and workplace communication

“At reentry, people are managing enormous cognitive and emotional demands,” said Samantha Halverson, LCSW Progress Works California Director of Therapeutics, drawing on over 20 years of experience working with reentry populations.

“When used correctly, AI can reduce overwhelm, help organize thinking, and support healthier decision-making—without replacing human judgment or support.”

Workforce Readiness as a Protective Factor

Stable employment is one of the strongest predictors of successful reintegration. SpecOpsPATH positions AI-supported job readiness as a protective factor—helping participants understand how modern hiring works and how to engage with it confidently.

Board Member, Dr. Floyd McGregor, emphasized the importance of combining structure with compassion:

“SpecOpsPATH works because it treats participants as capable adults. It blends therapeutic insight with real-world skill building, creating stability instead of dependency.”

Participants leave the program understanding AI as a tool, increased digital confidence, and a clearer path toward employment or training.

Building Opportunity Through Partnership

The collaboration between SpecOpsPATH and Mass Liberation reflects a shared commitment to equity, access, and long-term success for justice-impacted individuals.

According to Gary Merten, Executive Director of Progress Works California:

“AI is already shaping who gets access to opportunity. SpecOpsPATH ensures people returning home are not left behind by that reality. This program is about dignity, access, and building real pathways forward.”

A Model for the Future of Reentry Education

SpecOpsPATH represents more than a single class, it is a scalable model for how technology, workforce development, and therapeutic design can work together to support successful reentry.

By focusing on employability, emotional health, and practical AI skills, the program helps participants move from survival to stability and from reentry to opportunity.
